5 Things to Know About Organic Cosmetics for Smarter Shopping

Have you ever walked into a store to buy a lotion or shampoo without knowing which specific brand you’re looking for?

You may walk into an aisle with dozens of brands, and pick one based on its appealing package. If there is a tester, you can smell it, or sample it. Is it good? There is no way to know. Most people buy like this, shopping in the dark.

Only after you get home do you understand what you bought. It comes when you realize it doesn’t work, or your face breaks out in hives, or buyer’s remorse kicks in.

With conventional products, it is actually really hard to know what you are getting, because there is not much regulation of the formula or labelling. Hundreds of artificial — and potentially harmful — ingredients are used, and consumers are increasingly becoming aware of this.

For everyone’s benefit, things need to change. But it will take time.

What if I told you there is a better way, and that you can embrace it today without waiting? I hoped you’d grab this chance!

To get started building the new, beautiful you, all you need is a little education and you can run off to the store or shop online feeling confident and assured.

The new way to shop is to shop for organic cosmetics. Organic beauty is a huge trend right now because more and more people are discovering that the products really work, and there is nothing harmful to your body or the environment to worry about with organics.

And with Certified Organic Products, things are guaranteed to be more transparent. There’s also restrictions to protect you, so you know exactly what you are getting, and that it’s good.

People in the organics industry are also relatively more friendly and open about what their products are really like, and what’s in them.

It’s a smart idea to learn more about certified organic cosmetics.

5 things to know about organic cosmetics for smarter shopping

1. Look For a Certified Organic Logo

Many companies “Greenwash,” or even “Organicwash” products. They can make it appear like it’s organic and natural when it’s really not. This can be really confusing to consumers.

Certifying organizations that award the Certified Organic logo hold participants to a standard you can trust, but there are many certifying organizations out there too.

To be sure, research the organization, and its standard, as well as the company you are considering buying from. Do it before you buy to avoid disappointment.

2. Percentage Organic

This one is really critical! Some products contain tiny amounts of organic ingredients, yet claim to be organic.

The reason is some standards allow as little as 5 percent organic ingredients to claim the products are certified organic.

Make sure you get real organic stuff by looking for the exact percentage of organic ingredients in the product.

3. Full Ingredient List

Hidden ingredients are allowed in conventional cosmetics, but this is not the case for certified organic cosmetics.

With certified organic products, all ingredients have to be listed in descending order of quantity. This means you can check out exactly which goodies are in the bottle and make sure there’s nothing you have allergic reactions to, or that you want to avoid.

4. Expiration Dates

Unfortunately, due to the restrictions on allowable preservatives in certified organic cosmetics, we have to face the reality that the shelf life is shorter for organic products, compared to conventional.

Look for both the expiry date and the shelf life after opening. It should be printed on the products.

5. Manufacturer’s Details

Again, unlike conventional cosmetics, where you can simply list the brand details on the packaging, with certified organic products it is compulsory to print the manufacturer’s details.

If the brand does not make the products itself, it must submit paperwork to the certifying agency to prove it is acting responsibly in how it is manufacturing.

Furthermore, the requirements are different in different countries. Australia, for example, was an early adopter of organics, so its standards are more evolved and strict. (The United States is also good.) Conversely, due to government corruption in China, nothing certified there is trustworthy for the time being.

I personally believe these things are more important than beautiful packaging or a nice aroma. That is why my brand has three organic certifications, two in Australia and one in Europe, and it’s why I certified my own manufacturing facility.

To me, quality and transparency is everything. I make sure that every ingredient is checked by the standards, so the synergistic blends of organic botanicals I created for your skin and hair contain the purest organic botanicals available on the market.

To your health! Let me know what you think.
